State above nation? 24 out of 14 major railway projects are for Mamta\'s home state "West Bengal". What safeguards should be given to prevent regional ministers from giving lion’s share of goodies for their home states?. Initiated by Rahul parkhi on 25 Feb, 2010 | Total Comments: (59) |

- I can't understand where is the Rail Budget done actually? What is done is nothing but a Election Manifesto for West Bengal election 2011 for her Chief Ministership.Since there is no law against the cheating the people by the politicians from their endless promises, they give all useless advertisement at the cost of public money. - What we must understand is that most of the budget provisions will never take off.The budgets are nothing but election manifestos of politicians/political parties keeping in mind the country men as vote bank particularly rural/uneducated class. After the exit of these politicians from power, the on going projects will crumble due to the changed priorities by new incumbents in power Posted by JAYA PRAKASH Srinivasa Murthy, Assistant General Manager at Bharat Earth Movers Ltd | 04 Mar, 2010
- We are habituated with this type of since independence. When a minister comes from a state, he / she tries to become the god of that state. It may be U.P. / Bihar / Tamilnadu / Kerala / Maharashtra or whatever. Mamata is not the exception. After a long period of time, West Bengal has received the majority of the railway projects. Rest of India should appreciate Ms.Mamata, instead of criticising her. Posted by Debasish Dasgupta, Senior Manager (Finance) at Simplex Infrastructures Limited | 04 Mar, 2010

- Your contention seems to be logical. But, so far as I could understand the Indian politics, the individual interest is above the interest of the Nation. Till today, the Indian politicians are working only keeping in their mind the interest of their party as well as individual interest. Ms Mamata Banerjee has simply followed the path paved by her predecessors. Moreover, since you are working in Metro Railways, which is a part of Indian Railways, you can well understand that the projects she has announced will never take place in reality, as the Indian Railways does'nt have that much of money. So it is better to forget about and forgive the unrealistic Railway Budget. Posted by Aparesh Goswami, Personal Assistant at West Bengal Electricity Regulatory Commission | 01 Mar, 2010

Hi Rahul
Gone are the days when Parliamentarians were qualfied enough to look after the nation's interest. The opposition leaders were also equally responsible. So the nation's interest was the first priority for all of them. But today what is happening in our homeland? Nepotism, corruption, ugly behaviour, lack of patient hearing, quality administration and above all misuse of power. It is no denying the fact that the fruits of her earlier budget during the NDA regime and even that of the last year are yet to be seen. Many of her projects got token sanctions and most of the unrolling stones now gather moss. Yet then she is at it again, showing generousity towards her own state. - There is no denying the fact that eastern states lag very much as far as infrastructure development is concerned. So I see nothing seriously amiss if the minister who happens to be from WB,is partial in alloting proportionately more projects to WB,as compared to other eastern states.Railway ministers in the past too have been following this tradition. There is general deficiency of infrastructure development for the country as a whole. For reasons of political expediency in our coalition politics,if one part of the country receives more attention,I don't think we should grudge. When discuss about the lion's share given to a state we are hitting at the basics. We are questioning the authority of the Mininster we have elected. Now we feel that our own Minister has betrayed our trust and faith in her capability to do justice to the whole nation. Definitely the nation should always be above any state. In order to rectify the imbalances created in the past (due to various reasons) some day some one has to take a hard decision which may not appease every one but provides a road map for bringing in the desired correction. - Most of the railway ministers do favour for their home states ignoring some important states by priority through different factors. Connectivity by rail plays an important role in development sector. First of all one has to identify the states which have to be given priority and this has to be conveyed to the Railway minister before he/she prepares the budget. Had West Bengal insisted on State being above the Nation, many of the economically advanced states would not have reached their current position. West Bengal supplied coal cheap to all other states to help their industrialisation. The same was true of both West Bengal and Bihar in regard to Steel. If West Bengal was neglected earlier may be she is doing some good for her state. It is the duty of Cabinet Ministers in their meeting to review and question the favoratism shown by Ministers. I donot think none bothers once this type bias is shown. Outside the Parliament, when the MP's conduct Public Meetings they shout as if the bias had taken place without their knowledge.MP's for the matter donot know for themselves what is needed in their constituency. Dear Mr. Rahul Parkhi,
To start withI agree that nation is always above states. Having said that and to answer u on the statement I would say that nation is made up of group of states comprising of many state ministers who are again representatives of their people who have elected them. I am certainly not trying to justify anything but if the same thing would have happened and somebody else would have been the mininster we would not be posting this on net and discussing it. The railways in past have not done enough for this state compared to other states and she has tried to bridge this gap a bit but her so called fault is that she is from the state. who will understand the problen better than her? Didi, think big and be a national leader than the leader of WB. I can understand your memories with Jyoti Basu during his CM ship. Though I strongly favour the doctrine of equal distribution of wealth and development but if we analyze the long neglect of the state I think West Bengal needs more than what is left there now. If we s look at the state of affairs especially in North Bengal; there is no industrial infrastructure, tea gardens are almost dead and the locals have become poorer.
