  • He wanted to go out of India. his plan was to get asylum in the US. But US people are smarter and understood his anti Hindu feeling.
Many of the muslims in India hate Hindus. Husain is one of them. He used to boldly make paintings of Hindu God - Godses. This can not be the attitude of a neighbour or fellow friend. This is the feeling / grudge / anger / hatred. It is good that people with such nasty ideas move away from us and make our place good and clean. • There are many such good painters. It was Russi Modi of Tata Steel who pulled Hussain from rags and asked him to paint certain portion of TATA CENTRE. There after he rose with support from Tata s.
His style is using Horse heads mainly - stereo type and lacks creativity..

  • Judge yourself......................please read and see the picture
If a person dresses like a Sikh Guru, thousands of Sikhs gather and destroy their establishments , threaten to kill him, announce a bounty on his head - Sikhs are not criticised for being communal and intolerant,
If a Danish journalist depicts the Prophet of the Muslims , Muslims all over the world rise in anger, there is violence, a booty on the head of the Journalist - Muslims are not criticised for being communal and intolerant,

  • I totally endorse freedom of expression but I do not support defiling of others' deities.

Hussain is now waht he calls a country where free expression is encouraged. Good for him. I would love him to draw a nude of Fatima.

Why then do we have a fatwa against the Danish newspaper? Is freedom of expression only the domain of one community?

No folks, communication is a two way process.

India should NOT be ashamed. In fact Hussain has to answer and provide his logic for defiling deities of other religions. If his answers are not satisfactory, he should be dealt with as per the laws of the land. Answered by Ajay Chaudhari , CEO at Adroit Consultants | 09, Mar 2010 06:01 PM

  • What is the question of being ashamed?? This is the option he has opted. His work in the name of Art was a shame. He has never painted his "Apni Mata" instead painted "Bharat Mata" and selected only Hindu Goddesses!
No one should take that level of "freedom of expression" in the disguise of Art or literature that becomes unacceptable to a very large population. In India, we do not approve every action of right wing people, but some some them like what happened against MFH is always welcome. He can not be allowed to take the whole Hindu community for granted just because he is an artist!! No. Actually beyond a certain IQ, a certain age and a certain wealth; nationalism just disappears. MF Hussain has a combination of all three factors. So, no surprises and definitely no shame.

There is a limit to tolerence and depicting Hindu Goddess in a vulgar way cannot be tolerated in any society. The press in the mainstream appears to be obsessed with the topic to drive home the point that this should not have happened. There appears to be a conflict of interests between the artist's creative freedom and sensibilities of religion. The uniqueness of faith in India is the intelligentsia in India are themselves as a class not so sensitive to the larger but less vocal population who value their faith several notches above the idea of freedom. • If anyone is really a supreme professional expert in any field, he will think more than twice before acting or taking part in any activity which could turn sensitive. It is not fear that drives but sensibility. Our expert M F Hussain was misled and did what he did and had to repent. But by highlighting it as a shame our media is exposing India in negative light and dividing the public opinion or atleast the art fraternity in using their sensibilities. • Innumerable Indians are living in foreign countries and their fate is not even discussed in the media. If Hussin thinks his decision to quit Indian nationality is SANE why bother. India gave him freedom of expression and the rightists also have freedom to disagree with his artistic whims. We can only wish Hussain all the best for his future and hope he does not dare his new countrymen with similar artistic freedom. But if he wants to compare the Indian response with his new country's response he should at least once fill the canvas with some comparable images. Hope the media will use its space for more purposeful happenings around us. Answered by anil kapoor , Associate Professor at RRHPM Arts College | 04, Mar 2010 08:50 PM

  • All those who have talked of low tolerance level in our country etc. should first answer one simple question : what is their view on someone painting a goddess in the nude, that too a goddess of a faith not practised by the person ? I agree that we should not take law in our hands and as a society should provide complete security to everyone and that law should take its own course. However, the basic question about the propriety of the acts of Husain Saheb remains. He is not even apologetic about it.

If one community is so sensitive over coverage of face , how can you expect that others will not be hurt by nude paintings . The psedudosecular views aired by his supporters who are ashamed are not to be given cognisance at all. His disrespect only shows his communal hatred and taking shelter in the name of ART does not convince a common man. Merely because the Hindu is a very tolerant creature it does not mean that you can insult hindu beliefs and get away with it. Such persons who wish to have creative expressions must do so with their own religion and not other peoples. If he did offend sentiments of a populace, he should have apologised . Where was his EQ then ? When emotions get stirred , response needs emotional containment. He should thought about it before proceeding on the path of derogatory portrayals of Hindu goddesses. If all the defenders of the faith are so bothered about the depiction of women and Goddesses, why does no one protest against the item numbers in films, about scantily clad goddesses in every mythological serial and film? And this is a faith that openly worships the Lingam and Yoni and yet pretends that sex and nudity are offensive! As Kabir said,

For, I too understand his creative urges' needs as an artist but could he dare paint a cigar in Jisus' mouth or the Holy Koran painted with cow-dung and disrespected? If he is so creative and freedom of expression chauvinist, then he must do such things and then be ready to face music. • I do not think we need to be ashamed for his decision. There are scores of people opting for US citizenship. Are we ashamed for that? However, I have a question to Mr Husain. He portrayed only Hindu Gods/ Goddess in nude. Why he did not do the same with say Mohammad Saheb? He would never had got citizenship from any of the Muslim countries. On the other hand he would have had fatwa issued against him. I think his decision is purely personal to enjoy tax free living and nothing to do with Indian/ Hindu fanatics. The artist in the name of creativity and imagination has no right to hurt the sentiments of any individual or any section of the community or religion. Can he expose his creativity in the same lines in his new country ?....Let him kill the arrogance in him and start respecting the sentiments of others too.. His decision to take Qatar Citizenship shows that he is More Concerned About himself than the Mother India. Beside this many times we appreciate foreign nationals (but Indian origin) and become happy or/and feel credit of being them as Indian. So it doesn't matter the same here also. • To accept citizenship of other country is his own decision and he should not blame our country. He is supposed to think why he was forced to leave the country. The crime he committed must beg apology to the nation but he is taking plea of as great artist. Think the same mistake if committed against Islam or any other relegion what could be the fate. The burning example is Taslima and Saleman Rusid.Since he is Indian and by and large we used to be liberal he delibrately took this advantage and now giving blame to right wing people of India and the Govt. Since he is not accepting his mistake instead of making an appeal he must be punished openly for hurting hundu feelings. • Well said... However, do you think Husain's saheb would, even in his wildest of imagination, dare to portray the faith and reverance a muslim country in a manner he did for a hindu faith? Also, why hide behind a shield after committing that he follied into portraying a hindu godess in a way the hindu would rarely enjoy? I agree... this involves hypocracy to some extent however we also cannot ignore that this is mostly a politically activated issue than a pure faith based one. . Certainly, no individual is above the nation and everyone is equal before the law. But is this episode a sheer example of how vulnerable an artist/public figure is in this country? We have discarded our own for silliest reason, he like any Indian has all the power to exhibit his individuality and likings and no individual or group can run their show India is not a banana republic. • I think Hussain was not respecting the freedom provided to him by the great constitution of our country. Being an artist getting the freedom of expression is definitely something but not everything. Though I have personally assisted a curator in organizing a successful Art show in Mumbai but Hussein seems to be vulgar, low class and publicity seeker in few of his work. Now the problem is if you are too good at something even the miner fault shows up in a big way. So I am not with him at all. • MF Hussain has every right to defend himself in the legal cases against him, ask for security cover and ask for even support from art lovers and freedom loving intelligentsia of India. It is a highly blurred view to say India rejected him. Which India is he talking about? An artist is a human being first (caring for others' sensibilities) and a citizen next (responsible and equal before law of the nation). If an artist insists he will care to be the least of these for the sake of freedom of art, I wonder, whether that art matters to a society. I do empathize with him, an artist pursuing life and art at the age of 95. I would have adored him had he defended himself. I do not want to pre judge whether he is guilty or otherwise, ...See More Answered by GOPALAN PARTHASARATHY , Vice President & Head - Risk, KSA at BankMuscat | 03, Mar 2010 11:23 PM

It was during interval only that he was noticed by some persons who approached him for autographs and photographs. He was not replying to any querries.
The gloomy face and strature describes his mental condition.
In my view,Mr MF Hussain always want to be in news for his controversial paintings and statements.India as a true democratic country gives freedom to every citizen ,which is not available in all countries. We should not be ashamed for his exit because he is responsible for the events. • I've had the good fortune of interviewing Husain quite a few times, and the most memorable piece was a 7-page interview with him which appeared on the cover of Sunday Mail. This was when he had started painting for his autobiography. He's always been eccentric and never answered such dicey questions because he's also pretty gimmicky. Let's not get into this fundamentalists vs the secularists debate, because at the end of the day, as someone said, Ethics n Aesthetics is the same thing. How can anything be aesthetically pleasing if it offends certain sensibilities? To be very hip and say, so what, then let this logic also prevail otherwise, if Husain would have the guts to use his artistic license for the Christian n Muslim ...See More Answered by Jyoti Sabharwal , Editorial Director & Publisher at Stellar Publishers Private Limited | 03, Mar 2010 10:31 PM

You are right - no one gets an authority in the name of art to hurt the sensibilities of people. This violates the basic right of freedom which our constitution gives. . • No. There is no reason to be ashamed. My reasons for the same are as follows.
    1. Artistic freedom of expression has never been unfettered any time or any place in history. If blasphemous writing is/can be banned, why not blasphemous painting. Artistic freedom always have to follow the boundaries of culture, religion, law, and sensivities of the land.
    2. Persecution can be perpetrated by state or its passivity. Hussein was never persecuted by the state. A section of people were against his method of expression and he had all the recourse as per the law of the land available to any other citizen of the country facing opposition to his views or methods. • I am afraid we Indians have to blame ourselves for Husain's decision. If he had been a run-of-the-mill artist, we could have ignored it. But though nobody can accuse India of having exiled him, his action has dented our country's image as one of the most tolerant countries in the world. The fact remains that the threshold of tolerance has never been lower in our country. And that is a pity. • How do you define tolerance? Is it that one should not react even If his wife, mother, daughter and sister are insulted and even If one’s sentiments and beliefs are played with? . Commented by Srinagesh Tanikella, Manager Finance at TNS India Pvt. Ltd. | 707 days ago
  • I had the same opinion as you. However after seeing the answer of Jyoti Sabarwal and by reading some of the other answers here - I am tending to change my opinion. It is not right for any artist to hurt the deep religious sentiments of the people. Also since the court case is pending, Indian govt. should have given proper security to him to prosecute him. He need not have lived in exile because some group of people wanted him out.

But still this does not justify whatever he had done earlier. It is not loss for India- it is his loss. He should have come to India, fought his case. What is he gaining by having so much love for his life at age of 95. Now was the time to fight for the right. .
