  • iairport retailing is purely meant for the travellers, hence it does not any treat to the malls & the shopping centers, whether it will be the next big thing depends on the marketing stratergy of the airports authority, Dubai duty free is an classic example of this genre Answered by NEVILLE SEQUEIRA , manager operations at freelancer | 28, Jul 2010 08:39 PM

  • HI RAJEEV
as for the shopping area expantion in the airports ( well that is the way i see it ) it will definately be a plus for the people who have to check in one hour before the departure time. they need to kill the time & this will be best for them.
as regarding the sales volume & turnover that will be definately much better results then the malls.the simple answer beeing that those who fly have deeper pockets then those who go to mall to just wander.

  • it is a good idea. if peaple have shopping Mall in the airport surrandings, they will buy. This is a new concept. It will devolop slowly. If home delivery facilities are avalable then it will be more easy for passengers to procure goods from Air Port. i think this is an good idea to devolop retail facilities at Air Port. • It may not be the big thing in retailing, but Iam sure it will give a new dimention to retailing. Due to weight constraints volumnes and heavy items will tricky to sell but I am sure an efficient home delivery system tied up some airlines will do a great business. Waiting for your next connecting flight is inavaitable because most airlines follow the Hub and Spoke structure. So Air port retailing is going to grow and it is an nice opputinity. • Hi Rajeev.
I am not sure if its going to be the next big thing as volumes will not be so great. It will definitely be a new channel from the sales perspective.
Also depending on the category a good medium to reach out to the right target profile, create awareness, nduce trials and drive traffic to out of airport points of sale. Answered by Sunita Bhagatjee | 16, Jul 2010 07:25 PM
  • Hi Rajeev,
Sales of exclusive items which will be usefull while travelling like books and which can given as gifts like chocolates , liquor or toys can be boosted at the airports. Taking into consideration some of the constraints like weight , volume as well as time , airports can be effectively used to create brand awareness by way of product display and advertising for higher end products.Product launches of high value products can be effectively done at the airports. Any point during your travel where there is a compulsion to spend certain amount of time can be effectively used for retailing e.g airport, petrol pumps etc. Answered by Jitendra choudhari , General Manager -Projects at Nash Robotics & Automation Pvt Ltd | 16, Jul 2010 10:55 AM
  • I think it's an avenue in retail which wasn't traveled before especially in India. Flyers arrive at airports well ahead in time and if their flight is missed or delayed they generally have a lot of time to loiter around in the airport premises. The price should be carefully fixed so that the buyers find it interesting. This can never come in way of the usual shopping malls and other such places because they both cater to different section of buyers. A person who is not travelling would never go to airport to shop. Answered by Alok Chander , Marketing Lead at IBM India Pvt Ltd | 16, Jul 2010 12:33 AM
  • Thanks Rajeev .In present senario if we will talk about half or a decade ahead I am sure about airport retailing will be big with limited target customers, mostly for flyers. Though "Airport" itself have its own so many limitation in terms of security /safety/ economy etc... but with certain tie ups with corporate fylers Offers, discounts can pull more buyers.
AS of toady I think impulsive buyers presence may be over there. It may also hit hidden desire. presently more or less retail shop are used as to span the time betwwn take off/ delays/ etc. Answered by Anita Dobhhal , Deputy Mgr Mktg Support Function at Halonix Limited | 15, Jul 2010 02:48 PM
  • Well I am from retail backgroun since past few years now and I am sure airport retailing would be the next big thing in india. Out of my past experiences I have always noticed mostly people from India come to dubai for their shopping and the only reason is to have a great shopping experience and to save their taxes. However now that people can find a similar shopping experience within india itself and unlike past people have more willing to spend on brands, there is no doubt that retailing in indian airport will boom. I don't think conventional mall or retailer will be affected so much because not everybody travels so frequent via aeroplanes. • I would give a 50-50 to this thought. One has to wait and watch. I live in dubai and airport retailing is big here but in the format of duty free only.

I think the service sectors can do very well at the airports but conventional retailing may or may not work in India. To be more specific I think India is not ready for it as yet.

The system will only work if airport experiece as a whole is enhanced like super fast checkings, no wait for visa stamping and the extra benefit of why a consumer can just shop at the airpoirt before travelling . • I would approach this with caution.....10 yrs back there was alot of halla gulla regarding malls and retailing.....today the situation is there for everyone to see....excessive rents, high footfalls and low conversions.....in my personal opinion the only winners are food courts and general retails - big bazzar etc etc hence i would adopt a "wait and watch" on this rather than rush to a conclusion - But there is no doubt that the potential for growth and success is there, if a good business model is applied..... • Sanjay accordingly Neeraj has commeted keeping all the factors inot consideration. No doudt Airport retailing can be a big thing in the future but simultenously it also depends on the Govt polices to entertain foriegn products alongwith Indian Products as all International Airports have taken this factor into consideration before putting up Retail shops at the airport and if the Govt takes into consideration the above stated point and prepares policies accordingly than Airport retailing shall be a big boost for Indian Manufacturers to showcause their products alongwith the International products and also it shall be a good revenue generation for the Govt but simultenously Govt should also maintain transperency in their plicies on a long term basis. It is bacause I have worked at Nairobi Intl Airport and yes I feel Neeraj comments should be given a deep thought.. • Sanjeev I agreed to your point to a certain extent but as the market i.e. National and International are growing due to fierce competition thus it is not the low cost airlines but if you considering the fact that foreign consumer brands are being sold on a regular ground by local retailers and also at malls which indicates that the purchase power is there in the public and it is due to the quality which plays a important role in todays market. Thus the low cost airlines may not be a hindrance if the Govt encourages Airport retailing by framing proper policies on a long term basis. Flyer category may not find non-branded,ethnic and cottage industry goods in airport retailing. But this is certainly a good move to have airport retailing facility of all types of products. • Hi
Development of Airports is welcome all over the country. The development project will definitely focus on en cashing free inner space. Corporates and multinationals will find ways of branding their products.
The flying segment of customers today are definitely brand conscious today and a large percentage use them.So it all depends on how the product is focused to woo the buying segment! If the stores is inside the airport, it plays a different role, If outside the building, there is another group who come to drop off or park for a while and sip some beverage!

Airport Retailing should be more marketing focused rather then sales focused. It will be more of window shopping when delay in flights rather then actual shopping. But it will definitely help in brand awarness and sampling of products.

Not sure we can look upon it as the next big thing- but then this depends upon the timeframe we are talking about.
But the following will probably be the key points-
    1. Good for for impulse purchase products
    2. Goods like cameras,Laptops(and accessories), mobiles
    3. More than retailing, initially sampling and BTL activities for the above goods would grow-a very targetted segment would be flowing through.
4.Finally, as the next generation-people born after 1980- grows in terms of working population,we will see more purchases/conversions

  • Hi Rajeev,
Airport retailing is definitely here to stay but the difference between footfalls and their conversions wil largely depend on the price ponts of prodcuts available at the airport counters.
Today's consumers are well aware of the price points and given the high rentals at airport retail oulets, if the retailer can match the price points in the malls..they would surely have greater conversions. It will surely be a balancing act for the retailer. Answered by Deepak Kripalani , Proprietor at HUGH CORPORATION | 14, Jul 2010 08:46 PM

Firstly, the T3 is a beautiful piece of work and the expanse is really large. The retail through this channel i.e Airports is definitely a growing business branch and has numerous eye balls to exposure to all strata of people from different SEC categories. The sector is full of opportunity for the small impulsive products to food , cosmetics to electronics to apparels, jewelry, ethnic Indian products etc etc, but most important for the brown to white good niche it is an exposure to give an experience which can be en-cashed later through city outlets per say. • hi,

Good to know that airports are getting a new facelift and also trying to get into retail stream. Nevertheless even a middle class man can afford to travel by air but for sure he shall not shop in the malls which are inside the airport. Reason : as we all know the maintenance cost is higher as for as airports are concerned. As nd wen compared to the retail chain which is offering huge discounts and understands the need of a common man i dont think so retail chain within the ariport is going to get a positive response. Airport retail would actually work for niche products or industries. Eg-- lets say a company or store in say Delhi has their presence at the airport, they would get a lot of eyeballs & awareness creation would happen. This in turn would draw more footfalls & this could also turn into a branding exercise, Though regular stores would i think find it very expensive, as airport rent would be very high. Bigger companies any which way have many more avenues.
A thought-- our government for boosting our countries budding entrepreneurs & economy should invite them on say a rotationary basis to open shop at the airport & by some innovative method inform all the passengers passing through. • - Airport retailing, to me, is constrained by both time and anxiety factors followed by quality issue (at least at Indian Airports on certain items). I can share my story - I bought a couple of CDs for my daughter that eventually proved sour (as none of them opened up correctly).

    - Any kind of buying activity (given the customer's mental composition) can happen at its best while he / she has the comfort to do so. But, certainly it makes sense to have your product display there to let the world know what's on offer, say, from Godrej's table. A word of caution - still brand registering (if it's a new product / service) would be low compared to similar cases at malls and multiplexes.

  • Mr. Rajeev ,
I never feel that airport retailing will be the next big thing India. Consider , out of total population ( even urban population) use airport for travel. It is very less .
The person who travel by air never bother to buy anything except magazine , snacks , chocolate because each and everything is mostly available near his residence . The price factor is also one of the most consideration. India is price sensitive market and even rich people do not want to buy the same product at higher price .You can see it in any of the big retail house like Big bazar , reliance store , Spencers . Hardly 20-25 % who visit such store buy from them.

  • Its not a big thing.. Given we have hardly 4-5 good looking airports. Unique, locally diverse products, last minute remembrances; souvenirs.. that is it.. At max, impulse purchases. Why will you buy something big and heavy, given your weight restrictions? If its the same MRP, you can buy it anywhere. If it sis unique, not available in your city, you may buy it in impulse. What is needed a new paradigm to tap into a traveller with merchandise that is unique, and either fulfils a need or creates one.

  • Dear Rajeev, with growing economy the market is also opening up with more people having more disposable income, at the same time more players are there and need for newer markets, territories and mode of awareness and visibility, Airports at metros have good footfall and in shrinking times time management is becoming very important and vital, of course at airports give ideal opportunity to reach new customers, initially there may not be big sales but for advertising and increasing visibility for the target customer this is the ideal form with little more break even time initially. initial hick ups are bound to be there , but project is sustaiable in the long run in wider perspective other than direct revenue generation

  • Air travellers in India are likely to exceed 117 million this year to a forecast of 123 million. Given this volume of traffic and majority of this will be in metros, it is not difficult to imagine the growth relevance. This means a potential daily footfall of over 320000 across India and a majority of this would be in the metros. Not difficult to imagine, the logic. However, much would depend on the credibility and reputation of the shopping and point of purchase buying experience. Airports like Singapore and Dubai have earned this reputation, that shoppers budget time and money for shopping. Time will tell , how this shapes out, however, it offers great promise. Apparel sales and fashion led brands must not expect a windfall of footfalls. A good opportunity for the Foods/ Beverages and Book stores. - Target Customer segment are frequent travellers or adhoc ones
    - Customer loyalty - how much to track and measure - May open a new paradigm - but with lot of variables - like frequent flyers, same stores at multiple airports - could be across countries, limited footfalls due to restricted entry to people ( only the ones flying) etc.

Yes, I agree that its really big thing to have airport retailing were the market will have quality products but the margins will be very less due to the competition, comparing with another countries may not give you the right picture (on sales).

Here we cannot compare Airport retail industry with Malls or shopping centers. There are completely different segments of shoppers. Product selection and variety is limited at the airports. Hope this will find you in pink of your health. Well, as per my comprehension, airport retailing should not affect the other shop owners nor the supermarkets or malls.

See Dubai Airport. It has plenty of retails outlets with many schemes all the year round. Do the businessmen in Dubai Souks are sitting idle or are they submerged under the airport marketing and making losses?

Otherwise not the next big thing but definitely something that'll provide limited good opportunities. Especially for impulse purchases, sudden 'gifts-to-be-given' remembered etc.

Will be a good forum for cos wanting to show case their products.
Will get lot of window-shoppers. I myself recently spent a good amount of time at the Croma outlet judging a netbook I was planning to buy. Stores like Croma need to evolve a mechanism cashing in on customer query and follow ups for conversion.
