The intention behind making deemed Universities was to help good institutions get the autonomy after they showed that they were equally capable of what the universities were in terms of course content delivery and examination.
Unfortunately over the years the provision has been misused by those who could and the 'Deemed' status was available for a price. When price is paid it has to be recovered and hence the Deemed Universities are earning money as they got the status through power play. Not all Deemed Universities are bad but black sheeps exisit in every system.
The same Ministry under the same government declares an Institute Deemed and the other shows that they are not upto the mark.

YES.
if anyone analyses the founder/management of the deemed university, one will find most of them are founded by Politician with the sole objective of :
1. Grab land at much cheaper rate than the market.
2.Start professional courses like Medical, engineering, etc
3. Allocate only few seats through competitive exam and sell rest of the seats under management quota at a very high price/fees without any norms. Answered by NAGARAJAN BALA , PRINCIPAL CONSULTANT at BankPro Advisors | 10, Mar 2010 02:55 PM

Yes, there is no doubt that most of the deemed universities concentrated only on revenue generation but not the quality of education. Because of this tendency there is a chance of decreasing the quality in higher education particularly in technical education.
Even the curruculum design is also not upto the mark. They should prepare their curriculum on par with the global standards.
In most of the cases it is observed that competition is one of the most imposrtant reason for this situtation, followed by profit moto of the managements. Answered by venugopal pothuri | 10, Mar 2010 10:53 AM
- It is like both ways. They are concerned about revenues at the same time they are performance and output oriented too, which is essential to remain in the market. They have to generate their own funds, which could be done through revenues hence they have no choice but the when they focus only on revenues or tend to become money minting units then they become the matter of concern. Yes, if they are not serious about revenue then they are very casual about the future of their deemed university. Revene is necessary for sustaining any venture and further for its growth. The problem starts when the focus is only on revenue and not towards their commitment to students/stakeholders. It does not require any external agency to control the fee and the quality of education they impart. It shall finally be controlled by the market dynamics and ultimately the revenue seekers will have to shut their shops.

- Generalization is always inappropriate. Institutions run by Tata and Birla make the country proud too. So, instead of having a negative apprach to deemed universities, one should not ignore their services to student communities in genearl and society in particular. However, we cannot forget the fact that some rich men run deemed univerities, like any companies, for commercial gain too. In this situation, instead of getting harsh with these universities, the government should monitor their functioning sucessfully. And when it comes to academics, the money involved in developing infrastructure and facilities is enormous, definitely, the objective first is to get the return and than the rate of returns. no one is bothered what the institute is aiming at in long run. and surely they are not aiming to win Noble prizes in any discipline. What's wrong in wealth creation? Let's not worry about Revenue, let them be monitored to provide the best to the students...

- Not to speak of earning revenue is the concern of deemed to be Institutes from the students, but one can see that all nuisances starting from recruitment of Faculties with least ability to awarding high percentages to some specified students at the cost of money are the regular activities . Only preparing a syllabus of world class standard just to eye wash all is not the point to be analysed . With curriculum , one should be prepared to see all other requisites . I know , even in a Deemed University of orissa , there are awarding of mark even without a student appearing the exam . shame to the sysyem . A test to the same questions appeared by the students for a Faculty will only exhibit the real position . Government should do something in a positive spirit to save the future generations , otherwise a day will come when Engineers will be incapable of even doing a cooligiri and Doctors will appoint some quacks to advertise their quality without any real treatment. .
