Airport Authority of India is planning to install 3 radars in Orissa and West Bengal to increase the air security after the terror threats. The 3 monopulse secondary survillience radars (MSSR) will be installed and will be able to monitor for about 200 km or 200 nautical miles.
"The MSSRs will closely watch the movement of aircraft in the sky as well as their landing in any place," P K Singhal, AAI executive director (Eastern Region), Kolkata, said here.
The radars would be installed in Kolkata and Raniganj in West Bengal and Jharsuguda in Orissa for proper surveillance of aircraft moving in the region, Singhal said.
Currently, there is only one MSSR which is operating in Ganjam district of Orissa since 1992. The MSSR at Berhampur is able to monitor up to 400 km in air path and functions without an airport.
Singhal also said that the expected cut in air fares and reduction in the fuel cost is going to encourage more passengers in the next 2-3 years and hence, will increase the need of more security in air.
